What GSM Means in Towels

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It expresses fabric mass per unit area, not thickness, absorbency, softness, or durability by itself. A simple calculation illustrates the idea:

GSM = sample mass in grams ÷ sample area in square metres

If a conditioned 10 cm × 10 cm swatch has an area of 0.01 m² and weighs 5 grams, the calculated fabric mass is 500 GSM.
